We are pleased to announce that the CubeSat project DENDEN-01, led by Associate Professor Masaki R. Yamagata, along with students from the Extreme-Environment Chemistry Laboratory, has received the Grand Prize in the Knowledge Capital Division of the 12th Knowledge Innovation Award, organized by Knowledge Capital, the core facility of Grand Front Osaka.

The Knowledge Innovation Award is hosted by Knowledge Capital and honors innovative activities and projects that generate new value through the creation and sharing of knowledge, regardless of field. This includes original and forward-thinking business ideas from junior and senior high school students envisioning the next 20 years, as well as novel products and initiatives developed by members of Knowledge Capital. The award celebrates a wide range of creativity in technology, design, education, business, art, and more—not limited to traditional notions of “innovation” as strictly technical development, but also encompassing services, ideas, and socially impactful projects.

The award-winning project, DENDEN-01: A Demonstration Satellite for Innovative Energy Technologies, represents a unique approach to space exploration from the standpoint of materials chemistry. This advanced microsatellite project merges cutting-edge technology with empirical engineering to pioneer foundational technologies essential for the future of space business. The project was also highly evaluated for its broader contributions beyond technical achievement—such as hosting public events at Knowledge Capital—which have sparked intellectual curiosity and created educational and social impact in the Kansai region. These elements together led to its selection for the Grand Prize.
